'Vibe' magazine folds

After 16 years in publication, Vibe magazine has folded, but it may not be gone for good.

Vibe Media Group announced Tuesday that it was shutting down the magazine, according to the
New York Daily News. Vibe TV, Vibe.com and Vibe Books will be closing their doors too.

Right now the publication is finishing its June/July Real Rap issue. August’s issue, featuring The Dream and Christina Milian on the cover will be the final edition.

And the devastating news couldn’t have come at a worse time for Vibe.

"We were assigning a Michael Jackson tribute issue when we got the news. It's a sad day for music - for hip hop, in particular,” said editor-in-chief Danyel Smith. “It is with great sadness, and with heads held high, that we leave the building.”

The Publishing Information Bureau reports that Vibe’s sales had actually dropped about 40 percent since last year, and their circulation fell by 200,000 readers earlier this year.

But there may be one saving grace for the publication. Sources have said that Quincy Jones, Vibe’s original owner, might be looking to buy the magazine back.

"They just messed my magazine all up, but I’m going to get it back,” he told
EbonyJet.com. “You better believe it. I'm [going to] take it online because print and all that stuff is over.”
