Spike Lee revisits Alphabet City
Spike Lee and Robert DeNiro are working together to develop a dramatic series for Showtime called “Alphaville.”
The series will center on life in Manhattan’s Alphabet City during the 1980s when starving artists, DJs and B-boys lived next door to Black and Latino families. According to The Hollywood Reporter, “Alphaville” writer John Ridley will also try to capture the neighborhood’s problems with illegal drugs and violent crime.
Spike is slated to direct the pilot episode; he’ll also serve as an executive producer alongside John and Robert.
Alphabet City has been a popular backdrop for contemporary storytelling, serving as the location for the musical Rent and two of Robert’s own films, Taxi Driver and Flawless.
