The Rev. Al Sharpton recent bestowed an unexpected honor on Michael Jackson’s father Joe.

The
New York Daily News reports that Al gave Joe an award for his parenting skills on Saturday.

Al’s praise is raising more than a few eyebrows, but he is standing by his decision, holding Joe up as an exemplary father.

"The arrogance of [people] attacking a man for being a stern father,"Al said during his presentation at National Action Network headquarters in Harlem. "I wish we had more stern fathers - then we wouldn't be shooting each other up."

For his part, Joe was humbled by the award. "This feels great. I feel like I'm someone very special,” he said.
