Michael Jackson's molestation accuser's father dead
Wed, 11/18/2009 - 11:19 — whitney
The man whose son accused Michael Jackson of molesting him has committed suicide.
Evan Chandler, 65, was found dead in his New Jersey home on November 5 with the apparent cause being a gunshot wound, MTV News. Evan's son, Jordan Chandler, accused Michael Jackson of molestation in 1994 when he was 13 years old.
"There was no note found in the apartment, but officers did find medication in keeping with a serious medical condition," said a spokesperson for Jersey City police. After Evan missed a doctor's appointment for his illness, police were sent to check on him.
Evan and Jordan were friends of Michael's for over a decade ago, and the younger boy frequently spent nights at Neverland Ranch. Things turned sour after Jordan gave police in Los Angeles and Santa Barbara recorded testimony of his alleged sexual abuse by Michael. That led to police requesting that Michael consent to having his genitals photographed, an experience the entertainer later said was extremely humiliating.
Jordan's accusations were investigated but did not reach a courtroom. Instead, the Chandler's reached a settlement deal that was thought to be around $20 million.
MTV reports that a recently release biography, Unmasked: The Final Years of Michael Jackson alleges that the Chandlers' accusations were the result of furor over Michael severing his relationship with the family. Evan reportedly told Jordan's stepfather that he would attempt to extort money from Michael. "And if I go through with this, I win big time," the boy's father supposedly said. "There's no way I lose. ... I will get everything I want and they will be destroyed forever. June will lose [custody] and Michael's career will be over."
The book states that Evan gave his son the sedative sodium amytal, which is known for making people who ingest it agreeable to suggestions.
Following the settlement, Evan and Jordan made headlines again for domestic problems. The then-26-year-old son alleged that his father hit him with a 12-pound weight and sprayed him in the face with pepper spray. Evan was charged, but the charges were eventually dropped.
