Moviegoers get ‘Obsessed’
Whether it’s a concert venue or movie theater, Beyoncé knows how to pack a house.
Obsessed topped the weekend box office for its debut, pulling in an estimated $11.2 million on opening night alone. According to Variety.com, that makes it the best-selling premiere for an April thriller and the second highest ever for a Screen Gems release.
The movie, also starring Idris Elba and Ali Larter, made about $28.5 million over the entire weekend. Now, Obsessed has more than broken even on its production cost, which was just under $20 million.
Obsessed was more popular with Black audiences, and 58 percent of those moviegoers were women; almost 50 percent of the audience was under 25 years old.
The two other releases we told you about didn’t do too bad this weekend, either.
Fighting, starring Channing Tatum and Terrence Howard, grossed just over $11.4 million this weekend; The Soloist, headed up by Jamie Foxx and Robert Downey Jr., made more than $9.7 million.
