S2S was there as a bust of Sojourner Truth was unveiled at Emancipation Hall, making it the first sculpture of a Black woman in the U.S. Capitol.

Remarkable women, of all races, gathered to celebrate the milestone in the U.S. Capitol's Emancipation Hall on April 28. This is the first bust of a Black woman to be erected in Washington D.C., so Tuesday's unveiling was a historical event all its own.

The ceremony opened with a performance of “Nothing But The Truth” by Yolanda Adams, Dorinda Clarke Cole and Lomax Spaulding. Next, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi welcomed the audience. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee offered up a few words, too.

The crowd was really in for a treat when actress Cicely Tyson recited Sojourner's famous speech, "Ain't I A Woman."

Just before the Sojourner’s bust was revealed, First Lady Michelle Obama had some remarks on what this event means to her.

"The power of this bust will not just be in the metal that delineates Sojourner Truth's face; it will also be in the message that defines her legacy," she said. "Forever more, in the halls of one of our country's greatest monuments of liberty and equality, justice and freedom, Sojourner's Truth story will be told again and again and again and again."
