Keep the Pressure on Gov. Paterson

For the past two years, United African Movement has engaged in myriad efforts to keep the attention on the miscarriage of justice with respect to the wrongful conviction of John White in Suffolk County Court for defending himself and his family against a white mob. The initial pressure was on Gov. Eliot Spitzer.

Since Gov. Paterson took over the reins of government, he has pardoned a Chinese immigrant, a Latino soldier and a Black rapper, "Slick Rick." All of them admittedly committed crimes. Four hundred years ago, the slave codes made it unlawful for a Black person to defend himself or herself against a white person.

The cases are legion. They include Celia A. Slave. The Missouri Supreme Court ruled that a Black woman must submit to a white man. This rule was enforced in Tawana Brawley. Robert Williams, a NAACP official, had to flee North Carolina for advocating self-defense against whites. The Black Panther Party was decimated. Fred Hampton was slaughtered in Chicago.

On the other hand, whites can still slaughter Blacks, proving that Blacks are unable to even enjoy animal rights. See, for example, Amadou Diallo and Sean Bell. See also Sam Hose in 100 Years of Lynching. Joe Horn, a white homeowner in Texas, recently shot two Black men in the back on a neighbor's property who was not home. Texas made him a hero.

If anyone is capable of reading this article and connecting the dots, it shows that the slave codes and; therefore, slavery is still in effect despite the Thirteenth Amendment and President Barack Obama occupying the White House. In the final analysis, he is an oathtaker who was sworn to enforce "original intent."

At the last UAM breakfast meeting which occurred on the 153rd anniversary of Dred Scott, UAM agreed to sponsor an online petition to Gov. Paterson to pardon John White. This has to be done by a coalition of organizations and Black elected officials under our right to petition the government for a redress of grievances. The online petition is good to go.

All interested persons, organizations and elected officials should attend the forum tonight, March 24 at 7:30 p.m. at 1068 Harriet Tubman (Fulton Street) nr. Classon Ave. in Brooklyn. Take the "C" train to Franklin Ave. Walk two blocks to Elks Plaza. Time is of the essence. On NY 1 last night, former Mayor Ed Koch predicted that Gov. Paterson's stay of execution will be lifted in 10 days absent impeachment. Bring pen, pad and clipboard.

History is our guide to this historic moment. How can a governor in New York be removed from office? What is the process? Who was William Sulzer? Instead of retaining a high-powered criminal defense attorney, Gov. David Paterson should seek the advice of an expert in the New York Constitution. This is another case of a Black leader knocking on the wrong door, talking to the wrong people and asking the wrong questions.

White people are not testing Gov. David Paterson. They tested him at Columbia University and Hofstra Law School. They are testing us and, so far, we are flunking. Otherwise, we would already be in the streets. Instead, we are waiting on "the blind to lead the blind" no pun intended. See the teachings of Hon. Elijah Muhammad.
