Tiger Woods voted AP story of the year
The fallout from Tiger Woods’ countless affairs was the hottest topic in the world of sports this year.
It’s safe to say that 2010 wasn’t exactly a great year for Tiger. Ever since he publically admitted to cheating on his ex-wife, and apologizing for it, the public has been following the path of his golf career.
The Associated Press reports that after counting up 176 ballots from various news organizations, Tiger’s saga was voted the #1 sports story of the year with 1,316 points.
The public expected that when Tiger got back onto the green that he would blow away the competition. It seems that trouble at home was reflected in Tiger’s performance at the Tee. His return got off to a slow start with a fourth-place finish at Masters in April, which would prove to be one of the high points for his season.
The New Orleans Saints big win at Super Bowl XLIV was the second most popular story, and it’s not hard to see why. Although the Saints heading to the biggest game of the year was a huge deal for a still-recovering New Orleans, the team was seen as the underdog in the competition against the Indianapolis Colts. The Saints pulled a huge upset for Colts fans by winning the game 31-17.
The free agency frenzy in the NBA rounded out top three, which is thanks in large part to LeBron James and his now-infamous decision. Basketball fans in Cleveland, Chicago, New York and Miami were on pins and needles waiting to see where LeBron would take his talents. Tempers flared in Cleveland when he announced that he’d be joining the Miami Heat.
