President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle urged the public to honor the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by bettering their own communities.

The couple
kicked off the annual day of service for Martin Luther King Jr. Day at Stuart Hobson Middle School, where they are participating in a service project.

Dr. King obviously had a dream of justice and equality in our society,” President Obama said, “but he also had a dream of service, that you could be a drum major for service, that you could lead by giving back to our communities.”

The president also said that today’s good deeds would be a nice way to lift everyone’s spirits after the shooting in Tucson earlier this month.

“After a painful week where so many of us were focused on tragedy, it’s good for us to remind ourselves what this country is all about,” the president said. “This kind of service project is what’s best in us and we're thrilled with everybody who is participating.”

Members of the Obama administration have also been participating in community service to honor Dr. King’s memory.  For example, Attorney General Eric Holder, delivered remarks at Shiloh Baptist Church in Washington, D.C. and Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta.

Today, Al Sharpton attended a breakfast with EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson before participating in a community service event at Washington, D.C.
