Diddy honored at 2011 ASCAP Awards
Sean “Diddy” Combs was this year’s Founder's Award recipient at the 2011 ASCAP Rhythm and Soul Awards.
As historic a moment as it was, what was equally memorable was the award's presenter. West Coast hip-hop mogul and last year's recipient Dr. Dre did the honors of presenting Diddy with the award.
Contrary to his extremely confident image, a humble Diddy removed his infamous black shades before starting his speech, in which he expressed his appreciation. “I’m extra, extra happy right now. I truly, truly appreciate this,” he told the audience.
The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) Founder's Award is one of the most prestigious honors that ASCAP gives to songwriters and composers who have made leading contributions to music by inspiring and influencing their musical peers.
Dr. Dre gave the modern-day renaissance man his kudos during his presentation.
“Sean P. Diddy Combs is a hustler. He is what I call an extreme hustler," Dre said. "He’s a producer, a performer, an actor. He has created a clothing empire and he is also responsible for one of my favorite vodkas."
Diddy returned the love by recognizing his favorite producer. “I don’t know if y'all know my favorite producer in the world 'cause we in a room of producers and writers…Dr. Dre—my whole life—has just been my favorite producer,” he revealed.
Many songwriters, recording artists and music industry leaders, including Ne-Yo, Jimmy Lovine, LeToya Luckett and Kerry “Krucial” Brothers filled the audience.
R&B artist Miguel rocked the crowd with his hit “Sure Thing.” Other artists, such as rapper Pusha T, singer/ songwriter Andrea Martin and Mary Mary, took the stage.
Gospel duo Mary Mary was also honored with the ASCAP Golden Note award, which recognizes songwriters and composers for their extraordinary career milestones.
Many were honored and all were grateful. “This is truly a humbling experience and it’s a blessing and it's something I am not gonna take for granted,” Diddy said.
