Tiffany Greene doesn't blame BET
Tiffany Greene, a 2011 BET Awards contest winner, had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity as an award co-presenter. Ultimately, she became a part of a once-in-a-lifetime live television flub.
However, it turns out that she wasn’t to blame! During an interview with HOT 102.7’s Big Greg, Tiffany said that all she thought she had to do was tap the digital device in her hand and read the Coca-Cola Viewer’s Choice Award winner’s name. If only if it were that easy…
According to her, a stage manager whispered to her that the correct winner’s name would instead be shown on the teleprompter. Unfortunately, the tablet read “Chris Brown- ‘Look At Me Now’” and the teleprompter read “Rihanna-‘What’s My Name?’” After Tiffany announced who ended up being the true winner, Breezy, she stammered the conflicting name.
“I was already nervous because things had switched a little bit from dress rehearsal,” she said. “I really just tried to keep my composure because this was live TV,” she said.
BET personality Terrence J told the audience that Drake, a collaborator for “What’s My Name?,” would accept the award on Rihanna’s behalf.
“Well, this is awkward…” Drake said on stage.
As many know, it got weirder. At end of the awards show, comedian Kevin Hart declared that Chris was indeed the victor.
So, where does that leave Tiffany, a music fan from Flat Rock, Michigan?
“It was humiliating for me. It’s not like I’m a celebrity and I can redeem myself at the next awards show,” Tiffany said. “I was a contest winner. This was my only chance to cherish this and it got messed up.”
Stephen Hill, BET President of Music Programming and Specials, tweeted: “That BET Awards Viewer’s Choice mix-up was due to human error. And I was the human that made the error.”
Despite her initial tweets sent minutes after the flub, Tiffany definitely doesn’t think that she was set up for failure.
“There was speculation about that because of who the nominees were but I don’t think that at all,” she said. “I don’t think BET needs to do anything like that for publicity. I think it was an honest mistake.”
