Wanda Sykes gets double mastectomy
Wanda Sykes reveals how plastic surgery saved her life by detecting breast cancer.
The funny lady got serious about her health during a recent visit to "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," where she explained how a breast reduction uncovered a terrifying diagnosis.
"I had breast cancer," Wanda told Ellen. "Yeah, I know it's scary."
The scariest thing about the ordeal is that Wanda would never have discovered she had breast cancer if she hadn't decided to scale back on her cup size.
"This was in February. I went for the reduction. I had real big boobs and I just got tired of knocking over stuff. Every time I eat … Oh lord. I’d carry a Tide stick everywhere I go," she joked. "My back was sore so it was time to have a reduction."
Wanda said she was in recovery when lab work revealed "stage-zero" cancer in her left breast. At the point, her options were to monitor the cancer's progression with a mammogram every three months or have a double mastectomy.
Wanda, who admitted to having a history of breast cancer on her mother's side of the family, figured that the latter was a better option for her since she's not great at staying up-to-date with her appoinments.
"I'm sure I’m overdue for an oil change and a teeth cleaning already," she quipped while explaining her decision. "I had both breasts removed … because now I have zero chance of having breast cancer."
Scheduling challenges and family history notwithstanding, it made more sense to Wanda to be proactive about her treatment. "It sounds scary upfront, but what do you want?" the comedian reasoned. "Do you want to wait and not be as fortunate when it comes back and it’s too late?"
